02.19.09 Thomson Reuters Launches Enterprise IM Hub By Doug Caverly A lot of science fiction shows and movies - while great - feature painfully unrealistic moments in which the hero approaches some alien control panel and uses it with ease. Now, at least on an intraplanetary scale and where instant messaging is concerned, Thomson Reuters has unveiled a working solution to overcoming communications problems. Reuters Messaging Interchange, as the product's called, is meant to allow users "to connect and communicate with colleagues and counterparts by using one link - regardless of corporate or technology boundaries, as with email or telephone interaction." Other systems might force an IT department to spend quite a lot of time running down different odds and ends. RM Interchange should save companies money by making things simpler.
This new product promises to take care of security issues, too, which will please slightly paranoid individuals. The pressures of the recession aren't making the world any safer, after all. And David Gurle, Global Head of Collaboration Services at Thomson Reuters, pointed out in a statement, "The sharing of accurate and timely market information is never more vital than at times of heightened economic volatility. Over the last few years IM has matured and become the nerve system of many financial institutions to conduct business decisions, progressively replacing email."
