02.26.09 Google Ups Its Business Email Game By Doug Caverly Two days ago, Gmail crashed, and although the timing of the outage spared most Americans from noticing, a lot of business users in Europe and Asia were affected. So now Google's introduced a monitoring product to help communicate the status of some of its offerings. A post on the Official Google Enterprise Blog announces, "Customers can use this Status Dashboard to check on the current service status of individual services such as Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Talk, Google Docs, Google Sites and Google Video for business. Administrators of Google Apps for their businesses, schools and organizations can also view the performance of the administrative control panel." Admittedly, this may not make up for the recent outage, but Google tried to help on that front by giving its paying Google Apps users 15 days' worth of free service. Also, even if getting confirmation that something has crashed isn't the same as getting the service fixed, the Status Dashboard represents a nice gesture in terms of transparency.
It looks like Google's doing its best to make sure businesses continue to consider Google Apps a good communications solution, then. Gmail and Google Talk may get more of a foothold in the workplace as a result. If it's any comfort, the outage was something of a freak occurrence, too, with a post on the Official Gmail Blog explaining that some new code caused "cascading problems from one data center to another."
